How to design lighting?
Well-planned home lighting guarantees comfort and convenience of use, and also opens up a wider range of possibilities when it comes to arranging rooms. Each interior has different requirements for lighting, its intensity, and layout. So how can you design lighting so that it is functional and at the same time adds value to the arrangement by decorating the space?
What are the principles of planning appropriate lighting at home?
When planning appropriate lighting at home, it is crucial to strive to imitate natural light, both in terms of its intensity and color, but different rooms need different lighting. In the hall, bathroom or kitchen, spot lighting will be the best, while in the living room, bedroom or dining room, single lamps emitting diffused light will work perfectly. Modern solutions, such as magnetic rail lighting or recessed lighting in the walls, which can be freely adjusted depending on your needs, are also becoming increasingly popular.
Interior lighting planning involves taking into account three main types of light sources: general, spot and decorative. Their combination will not only improve the functionality of the room, but also give the interior a unique character. For this reason, lighting planning is more than just choosing the right ceiling lamp for the room.
General lighting should be a background for spot lighting and be located in the center of the room. In the case of larger interiors, with a larger area, a good solution will be to hang, for example, two chandeliers or ceiling lamps. Local lighting is designed to illuminate selected areas where specific activities are performed, such as reading a book, studying or cooking. It is important to choose it in such a way that it can be directed to a specific zone. Decorative lighting, on the other hand, is a solution that is to emphasize the aesthetic values of the interior and at the same time create the right atmosphere. It is primarily used to display details and is an interior decoration in itself.
Interior lighting planning - light source
There are various types of light sources available on the market for home lighting. We can distinguish traditional light bulbs, fluorescent lamps or modern LED bulbs. Standard bulbs and their halogen variant differ in power and often also in light color. LED bulbs are characterized by high energy efficiency, providing the same amount of light as a traditional 60W bulb, with a power of only 10W. An additional advantage is their ability to immediately reach full brightness.
When it comes to fluorescent lamps, which can be tubular or compact fluorescent, they offer a wide range of colors, from warm to cool. They are also very energy-efficient and have a longer lifespan than traditional bulbs, but their main disadvantage is the longer time needed to reach full brightness. Therefore, they are best used in rooms where the light is rarely turned on, but in turn remains on for a long time. Although traditional bulbs were supposed to be withdrawn from trade, they are still available and are the cheapest option, but also the least energy-efficient.
How to design lighting? Choosing the right light colour
Warm light colour is great for adding a touch of cosiness to a room, while cool light colour takes away the feeling of comfort. General lighting should have a low colour temperature, and lighting that will be used for work should have a higher one. And how can you check whether a bulb will have a warm or bright and cool light? You can check the colour temperature of the light on the product packaging. This value is expressed in Kelvin. The higher it is, the whiter the light is.
How to design lighting in a living room?
Large hanging lamps, placed in the centre of the living room, are the main source of light. To illuminate more shaded areas, it is worth using floor and table lamps. It should be noted that floor lighting directs light towards the ceiling, which makes them a perfect complement to the main source of light when watching TV in the evening. Another suggestion may be wall lamps, which not only add charm to the walls, but also create interesting decorative elements. Models with different lighting directions are available - both those directed upwards and with the lampshade directed downwards. LED magnetic rails are also becoming increasingly popular, as they look great in any interior, adding a modern character to the room. In smaller spaces, it is also important to use spot lighting, which highlights details and adds depth to the space.
How to design lighting in a kitchen?
A kitchen, being primarily a place of work, requires precise adjustment of light. Spot lighting, placed on the ceiling, under hanging cabinets or above the worktop, plays a key role here. Many choose halogen luminaires in the form of strips or single eyes, although linear fluorescent lamps available in various lengths also work great as spot lighting. Additional lighting for the cooker is also important - a hood with built-in lights is an ideal choice. In turn, you can consider installing a hanging lamp above the sink.
For general lighting in the kitchen, it is recommended to place it in the center of the room. Alternatively, instead of a single light source, you can consider installing several hanging lamps above the kitchen island or bar, which will create an effective decorative accent. Another suggestion is a hanging shelf above the island with several light sources placed underneath.
Bathroom lighting design - what to look for?
Lighting plays a key role in bathroom design, combining practicality with aesthetics. It is important to provide sufficiently strong light, for example for applying makeup and daily hygiene. Therefore, spot lighting by the mirror is essential, with a preferred light color close to natural. It is equally important to place a central light source on the ceiling, such as a ceiling lamp. In the case of bathrooms with suspended ceilings, halogen bulbs can be used. In the context of lighting the bathing area, it is worth paying attention to lamps with a lower current voltage, which are also waterproof.
Bedroom lighting - how to plan?
The need to create a cosy atmosphere dominates the bedroom, which leads to the popularity of bedroom wall lamps, night lamps and floor lamps. In many cases, traditional ceiling lighting is abandoned, but in the case where the bedroom also serves as a reading place or work nook, proper lighting of these areas is crucial. In addition, if the bedroom has a dressing room, its interior and the surrounding space require spot lighting. Light strips can be used for this purpose, among others.
